Wallets often flag new verified contracts as "untrusted." That is normal for a fresh deployment. Review the contract address and exact amounts in your wallet before approving.
Confirm you are on the real site
- Check the URL is exactly https://barterpeers.xyz (or www.barterpeers.xyz).
- Confirm contract addresses in your wallet match our Basescan-verified escrow and marketplace.
- Bookmark this site after verifying — do not follow links from DMs or unfamiliar posts.
- When in doubt, compare addresses on this Security page before approving any transaction.
Barter will never ask for your seed phrase or private key. Every transaction is an on-chain approval you review in your own wallet.
What escrow protects
No software can promise an escrow is impossible to compromise. Barter reduces risk by keeping settlement on a verified, non-custodial contract with fixed rules.
- Deposits go only to the verified Barter Escrow address shown on the Security page — the app cannot redirect them to another contract.
- Before you deposit, the app re-reads on-chain escrow terms and blocks deposits that do not match the linked offer.
- Only the seller and buyer named in the escrow can deposit; release is atomic once both sides are in.
- Participants can cancel or reclaim after the on-chain deadline if the swap never finishes.
- Owner keys can change protocol settings (fees, fee recipient) but cannot pull tokens out of open escrows.
Limits:
- A bug in the escrow bytecode could still cause loss — that is why contract review matters.
- A scam token can settle fairly and still be worthless — verify token contracts separately.
- A fake website with a fake escrow address bypasses the app entirely — bookmark the real site.
When risk is highest
Most Barter-related risk is concentrated while a trade is open — when you approve tokens and deposit into escrow. That is when you should verify contracts, amounts, and the real site.
- Approving the wrong spender or depositing to a fake escrow (phishing) — highest impact, happens before funds enter the real contract.
- Depositing a token you did not verify — escrow can complete fairly and still leave you with worthless assets.
- An open escrow with only one side deposited — funds can sit locked until the other party acts or the on-chain deadline allows reclaim.
After a swap completes
Once escrow shows complete, settlement is done. Tokens are in your wallets and Barter is no longer in the settlement path — there is no ongoing custody or app account tied to that swap.
- You do not need to stay connected to Barter or keep using the trade room after payout.
- On-chain offers, escrows, and transaction history remain public on Base like any blockchain activity.
- Optional off-chain coordination (share links, counters, Telegram contacts) is removed after the maker's retention period — it is not required for a finished trade.
- Move proceeds to a Safe or cold wallet if you used a hot wallet for trade size.
Verify token contracts
Escrow settles the exact tokens in the offer. A trade can complete fairly and still leave you holding a scam or worthless token if you skip contract checks.
- Open each token on Basescan and confirm the address matches your wallet popup exactly.
- Makers choose both tokens in a posted offer — takers should verify the offered token before depositing.
- Prefer tokens you already trust. Curated list tokens are common on Base; unlisted contracts need extra scrutiny.
- Approve exact deposit amounts only. Confirm the spender is the verified Barter escrow from the Security page.
- Use a hot wallet for trade size you can afford to lose; move proceeds to a Safe or cold wallet after.
In a trade room, use the Verify token contracts panel for Basescan links to each leg before you approve or deposit.
Can't connect?
SSL or “can’t connect” errors
Some ISPs (for example Shaw Safe Browse in Canada) intercept new crypto sites and break HTTPS. Try mobile data, a VPN, or contact your ISP to report a false positive. The site uses a valid certificate — check with SSL Labs or ask someone on another network.
Wallet won’t connect on mobile
Ensure WalletConnect is configured and you are on Base mainnet (chain 8453). Use an in-wallet browser or a supported mobile wallet app.
Wrong network
Barter runs on Base mainnet. Switch your wallet to Base before posting or accepting offers.
If your ISP blocked barterpeers.xyz by mistake, email support@barterpeers.xyz and we can provide contract links for your appeal. See also About → Contact.
